Government-Mandated Vaccination Requirement
Effective December 1, 2021, the government of Costa Rica will require proof of vaccination against Covid-19 in order to enter most businesses or to participate in large events. Visitors to Costa Rica will be required to present their completed "Health Pass" (see details below, under Requirements for Tourist Entry Into Costa Rica), along with their vaccination card.
The new requirement applies to restaurants, food courts, bars, casinos, stores, commercial centres, museums, gyms, hotels, event halls, sporting events, theatres, cinemas, adventure tourism, and places of worship. The only exceptions are services that the government has deemed essential, such as supermarkets, pharmacies, hospitals and banks.
Our COVID-19 Protocols & Policies
Our protocols to prevent or limit the spread of COVID-19 include social distancing, use of face masks, cleaning and disinfecting of surfaces, and hand-washing.
While on our premises, you must wear a mask covering your nose and mouth, except:
when you're outdoors, at least 3 meters (10 feet) apart from others, or
when, as our guest, you're eating, or in your private guest room, or in a guest room you share with someone you normally live with.
Anyone wishing to stay with us as a guest, or to rent our studio spaces, or to take our classes, must be fully vaccinated against Covid-19 using one of the following vaccines: Moderna, Pfizer BioNTech, AstraZeneca or Johnson & Johnson.
Requirements for Tourist Entry Into Costa Rica
We'll do our best to keep this section updated; however, the Costa Rica government may change its restrictions at any time. Here is a summary of restrictions in effect as of October 15, 2021:
Costa Rica now permits tourists to enter the country by air, sea, or land. Entry by land is currently allowed only if you are a resident of a country or region that does not require a consular or consulted visa for entry.
Travelers arriving in Costa Rica by land or by air don't need a coronavirus test and don’t have to quarantine on arrival, but within 72 hours or less before traveling you must complete an online health questionnaire called the Health Pass.
Tourists who have been fully vaccinated against Covid-19 for at least 14 days prior to arrival using Moderna, Pfizer BioNTech, AstraZeneca or Johnson & Johnson vaccine, must attach a copy of their vaccination certificate to their online Health Pass.
Before travelling, unvaccinated tourists and those who have not been fully vaccinated for at least 14 days must purchase an insurance policy that provides coverage for lodging expenses up to $2,000 in the event of quarantine, as well as coverage of up to $50,000 for medical expenses, including for Coronavirus disease. The certificate of insurance must be submitted with the online health questionnaire to satisfy the government of Costa Rica that your coverage meets their requirements.
The official website of the Costa Rica Tourism Board, visitcostarica.com, is updated regularly. The site provides further details about entry requirements, including special provisions for tourists arriving by sea, insurance requirements for unvaccinated persons, and a list of the regions and countries of origin for which consular/consulted visas are or are not required for entry into Costa Rica.
We strongly recommend that, before you travel, you verify requirements with your airline, your travel agent and/or the Costa Rican Embassy or Consulate in your country of residence.
